Chinese Language Curriculum |
Chinese Language Curriculum:The new curriculum based on unit teaching aims to make teaching more planned and effective. It covers nine categories: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, Literature, Culture, Self-study, Thinking and Moral character. The new curriculum also encourages students to read additional chapters and books relevant to the units other than the textbooks.
Speaking and Writing:In order to consolidate the language ability of the Primary 1 and 2 students, teachers designed a speaking and writing course to lay a solid foundation. This is a progressive course in which teachers will mainly teach Primary 1 students to use the four elements of narrative to tell stories and write sentences. Primary 2 students will learn to use the six action sentences to enrich the contents of their writing.
Primary 3 curriculum:Curriculum units were reorganized for the second semester of Primary 3 as some of the content from the textbook did not meet the learning needs of the students. Some texts and units were deleted, meanwhile, fairy tales were added and re-edited as a unit with the theme of “Friendship and Help, Persistence in Ideals” that also incorporate gifted elements: Higher-order thinking skills, Creativity, Personal and social skills to enhance students’ creativity and writing skills.
Strengthen Cantonese Pronunciation:In order to improve and strengthen students’ Cantonese pronunciation, there is a Cantonese pronunciation course for junior forms. Proper Cantonese pronunciation is included in the speaking exam.
Self-learning ability:In order to cultivate students’ self-learning ability, teachers have added requirements of self-learning when arranging homework, for example, use of my word bank, use of dictionaries and collecting of relevant information, so that students can develop good habits of preview before class and extension after class.
Primary 1 to 5 tiered support courses:In addition to the original curriculum, Primary 1 to 5 also have an added tiered support curriculum, which helps Primary 1 to 3 students understand and apply basic strategies and skills for learning Chinese, including oral training, writing, glyph structure, grammar, morphemes, reading comprehension and reading fluency. Primary 4 to 5 learn different reading strategies and writing skills across different text types. |
